What is a healing crisis and how do I manage it?

Brief guide on recognizing and managing healing crises during plasma sessions.

πŸ’‘

A healing crisis is a temporary and expected physical response that some members experience during their plasma sessions. It has a name, it has a cause, and it means your body is actively responding to the sessions. You are not getting sick β€” you are going through a process.

What is a healing crisis?

A healing crisis β€” also called a Herxheimer reaction, a herx, or a curative crisis β€” is a short-term worsening of symptoms that can occur as the body responds to plasma sessions. As the body processes and clears what it no longer needs, a temporary reaction can follow.

Think of it like a reset: the body is doing significant work, and that work has a feeling to it. Some members describe it as feeling like "a bad hangover." It is temporary. It is manageable. Additional plasma sessions, paired with proper hydration, may help reduce the intensity of the reaction.

The reaction is not caused by the machine doing something harmful. It is the body's own response to a process that is already underway.

What symptoms might I experience?

Members commonly report one or more of the following during a healing crisis:

  • Fever and chills
  • Muscle and joint pain or aching
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue or unusual tiredness
  • Light-headedness
  • Brief flu-like symptoms
  • Temporary worsening of existing symptoms
  • Skin flushing or rashes

These symptoms are temporary and commonly reported. They ease as the body adjusts, at a pace that varies by member.

How do I manage it?

There is no single required protocol β€” these are approaches that members find helpful. Choose what works for your body:

Hydrate generously. Sea salt mixed with water is commonly used to support hydration and electrolyte balance during this process. Staying well hydrated is strongly encouraged.

Rest. Allow your body adequate time for rest and recovery. This is active work happening internally β€” support it.

Reduce session frequency temporarily. Waiting 4–6 days between sessions gives your body more time to adjust. Spacing sessions out is usually sufficient.

Continue gentle movement. Light walks and flexibility exercises support circulation and help the body move through the process.

If you are currently taking pharmaceuticals: Some members who are taking medications notice a more pronounced reaction during sessions, which may reflect the body processing at a heightened pace. Consider reducing session frequency and increasing hydration. Do not adjust or stop any medication without guidance from your healthcare provider. Keep running sessions when you feel comfortable. Additional plasma sessions often alleviate the reaction. If performing multiple runs in one session, allow the bulbs to cool for at least 5 minutes between runs.

Warm baths. A warm bath with baking soda and/or Epsom salt may help ease discomfort.

Should I keep going or take a break?

Slowing down is not the same as stopping. If your symptoms are more than mild, reduce your session frequency before you consider stopping entirely.

A useful guideline: spacing sessions 4–6 days apart gives your body meaningful recovery time without interrupting momentum. Members who are more sensitive may also benefit from starting with shorter sessions (5–15 minutes) before building back up.

Stopping abruptly is rarely necessary. Pacing is almost always the right answer.
